The last thing one needs
From the *sigh³*-department… that’s a dying graphics-card and no warrenty for it. It behaved mushy for several weeks now (freezing Xgl/Xorg several times in a week). But just this morning my box froze 5 times within half an hour. My nerves can take some beating, but that’s too much for sure. At this spot big thanks to Nokia for the 770 again. Without that I would be pretty net-access-less. I’m “typing” this on the 770.
I’ll be away from things (hacking, email, forums, messing around) for an undetermined period. No idea how and when I can get hands on a new working PCIe graphics-card (this time with a warrenty *grrrrrr*). So if you need to reach me the best option are comments here on my blog.

Why not *turn XGL off* to lighten the load on the card - chances are that’ll stop the lockups.

First. You get what you pay for and a bit less (that bit less is called _their_ profit). Buy OEM, and pay for warranty replacements yourself. You will come out ahead in the long run. PCIe cards can be had for < $50 in both ATI & Nvidia in the States, so it surely can’t be a bank-breaking proposition elsewhere.

Hey. I can send you a new card. Just shoot me an email.

Do you have a paypal account I can send the money to?
Im assuming youre in europe and the cost of sending you an actual card wont be worth it.

What do you think about the 770? (before it was your only access to the Internet).

@ Jonty: The freezes not only happen with Xgl. Also during normal Xorg-usage the machine "gets stuck".
@ Rob: Thanks for telling me how the market and general business works
I would have bought myself a decent/new card in the first place, if my budget wasn’t so tight. Believe it or not even in Germany there are students, who have to watch every nickle and dime… we just call them cent and euro.
@ Brad: I’ll get back to you once I got email-reception working on the 770. Thanks for the offer so far.
@ ryan: Cool! Check the link http://macslow.thepimp.net/?page_id=23#mark_10 (that’s from the cairo-clock project-page)
@ Mark: It’s a great device. The screen is terrific! The fact that you can write your own stuff for it with your general gtk+-knowledge is superb. It’s a wise move by Nokia. The only things I miss are cairo and OpenGL
And nothing beats the possibility to ssh to or from the 770

Hey MacSlow, I have been your fan since seeing your Cairo Dock. If you want a decent card, I can get you the NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 for $400 USD but it’s AGP 8x though, so if you are interested in, I can help you out here, believe me you never can find such cheap deal.

Mirco, you killed a graphics card with all your elite effects! This isn’t a good advertisement for lowfat ;P
BTW: Check http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=353968
I think this is the best way as long as people use that part of WNCK
Seems the neatest solution.

@ Toni: That sounds like an awesome offer for sure, but neither would I be able to shell out US$ 400,- (QuadroFX 4500 or not *g*) nor could I do anything with an AGP8x card (my mobo is PCIe).
@ Karl: You have the funkiest of imaginations… my code never breaks anything… especially not hardware *g* For your WNCK-extension proposal good luck! It would be nice to have control like that at some point.

I put 200 euros in there for you to buy a new card. ofcourse food and rent are acceptable expenditures as well.
Buying you a card by no means requires you to do what I say, but if youre curious about the matter, Im extremely interested in lowfat, and hope you can continue working on that.
Coincidentally I am also a friend from University of Calgary of one of the guys who wrote BumpTop (Anand).

@ ryan: Thanks a lot! While Brad already stepped in getting me a new shiny 7900GT, your donation will help me getting a replacement for the venerable (but old) CRT from HP, which is showing some very lsd-ish colors sometimes. Maybe that’s a reason for my strange taste of colors. Looks like I’ll soon be able to see my "self-inflicted" eye-candy in all its real glory *g*. Speaking of BumpTop… interesting to see you knowing the developer behind it. So when you see Anand next time, give him a good tap on the back from me for BumpTop. I might not share his vision on dealing with icons, but it surely is a good and frech approach to certain things regarding desktop-metaphors.
