a skydome plugin for compiz
Yesterday I had the idea about this (a not so dull background for compiz, when rotating the desktop-cube/hexagon/whatever) and a nights sleep over it helped me figure out what I would want to achieve with such a thing. Some early screenshots will give you a rough idea of the thing I have in mind:

“Hm… mesh-resolution is ok.” (click for high-res) |

“Damn! Where is the texture?” (click for high-res) |

“Don’t try this at home, kids!” (click for high-res) |

“By day.” (click for high-res) |

“By night.” (click for high-res) |
To be honest about it, it will not increase productivity by any means. But I’m sure you’ll rotate your desktop one time more than necessary

EDIT: The only thing missing is the lighting of the desktop-cube sides.

Nice.
Now we need an SDL app to replace the static image with a highly detailed fractal generated sky
It’ll get rid of those resolution issues, you know!
I would want to add a sleek system info ‘desklet’ at each corner just to make use of all that eye candy!

Hi Daisy!
Well at least you have the option of an animated skydome now. Still not a dynamic fractal, but it’s a start, don’t you think?
BTW, didn’t you know that too much eye-candy causes eye-decay
Best regards…

Hi,
Looks like I’m a little late to the party =P
In any case I wanted to say thanks for the incredible work. I just started playing around with compiz this month and I’m just astonished. I doubt you are seeking any new ideas, but when I was trying to pick an image for my skydome I found it nearly impossible since they all look so nice with that effect. Now I’m on the hunt to see if anyone has come up with a randomizer for this plugin, just like a standard desktop switcher. It would give yet another reason to turn the cube to see which wallpaper you have today =D
Once again, Great Work!
