Ok, thanks for the explanation (and sorry for this late answer, I was really busy these days).

I already knew about these OpenVG implementation, Amanith (propietary), ShivaVG etc., and you are right that in the desktop there aren't any open source OpenVG (full) implementation.

Summarizing, now cairo has two backends trying to get hw acceleration on the desktop. One involves complete the experimental OpenGL backend, and the other complete the OpenVG backend and complete the OpenVG implementation. I suppose that this means that it would be more work the OpenVG solution, as it means two incomplete paths to complete.

Anyway, work on the OpenVG solution has the advantage of being useful for the handheld devices. After all, OpenVG was born more oriented to embedded devices (at least it is what the official page says (http://www.khronos.org/openvg/), and, AFAIK, there are OpenVG implementation for handheld devices.

And thanks for your suggestion of how to became famous ;), but as I said, somewhat busy these days, and sorry for the random rant.

yiunix: I've no clue. You got to ask that intel. Here you can see how to report bugs to them http://intellinuxgraphics.org/how_to_report_bug.html

@ API: If there would be solid, complete and robust OpenVG implementations available for Linux, it would make a lot of sense (there is an experimental OpenVG-backend for cairo). But all of the OpenVG implementations for Linux I know of, are either proprietary (thus closed souce and not available) or proof-of-concept implementations long been abandoned and/or unfinished. Nothing in the OpenSource world provides an industry-strength OpenVG-implementation right now.

There's an OpenVG implementation from Zack Rusin based on QtOpenGL, but that pulls in the dependency of... well Qt *rolling.eyes* And there is ShivaVG from Ivan Leben, which is probably the best effort sofar, due to the leanest glue code.

There is said to be an OpenVG state-tracker based on Gallium3D, but how much that means in the end still has to be shown. Gallium3D still belongs in the hands of its creating developers and not in the hands of client-application developers.

If you want to become famous, I'd suggest to pick up ShivaVG and finish that project.

Just a newbie question (and probably not the best place to do that), with a OpenVG backend, has sense a OpenGL backend?

Based in my ignorance, it seems that OpenVG fits better with the cairo purposes, what are the advantage of the OpenGL backend ? It would provide more flexibility? Are the OpenVG backend limited somehow?

Sure, Notify OSD is cool, sure everyone has an idea about how his screen, his workspace should look like, no one is telling others, where should they put things on their tables -- so why should Ubuntu be that restrictive with notifications?

I strictly agree with Mat, let users configure, let them say, what they want, in a configuration tool of Notify-OSD or in the GConf, not just in this thread.

Thank you
